First solo project using a screw driver

This blog is an exciting new endeavor! Ever since high school I have been an avid thrift-store shopper. I loved looking for the lowest prices and making things myself if I couldn't find them on sale.

My husband and I recently moved from Michigan to Philadelphia for him to start graduate school at Westminster Theological Seminary. We made the final decision to go sort of last minute. So we moved here with no jobs and one rented room to call our own space. More on this topic another day...

I wanted to display my first attempt at using a screw driver. I moved our furniture around the other day so that our couch could face the window instead of the wall. a HUGE improvement!

But, now we didn't have room for night stands next to the bed. Oopsies!
Tom went to work this morning and I wanted to do something about the new problem before he came back. I searched our room for possibilities until I settled on this shelf tower which turned out to make a perfect two shelf unit! It was actually made for our wedding by one of my former violin students as a step up to the stage. We had been using it as a vertical shelf since then. I took out the shelves, wiped it out and got ready to screw it into the wall.

I only encountered one more problem during the process. The shelf proved to be too heavy for me to hold up by myself while also keeping it level and screwing it into the wall. So I grabbed the nearest paperback books (Toms night time reading - Dostoevsky and Nietzsche) on the top of our headboard, and put the shelf on top of the books. The shelf sat perfectly in place so I could even leave it there to stand back and see how things looked. The books weren't thick enough to hold it as high up as I had originally planned to put it, but I will take it!
